Men's First Team: Drawnback by Defeat

Joshua Henderson

Oakleigh Havoc were unable to continue their winning streak after a tightly contested match against 1966 on Thursday night. The league leaders proved too much for the Men's First Team, scoring four goals in the second half to take all three points and retain their place at the top of the league table.

1966 took control of the first half by overriding Oakleigh in attack. The creation of chances was endless as Havoc's opponents looked to take advantage of scrappy defending. Their dominance in the opening 10 minutes was rewarded with two goals and looked to set up a comfortable lead heading towards the break.

A substitution at the 12the minute, however, would prove to be a turning point for the match. Navya Srivastava, making his competitive debut for Oakleigh Havoc, scored almost instantly and followed up minutes later with an assist for Jonah Caruana to level scores at 2-2.

With a seconds before the break, Havoc won a succession of corners and took advantage of the opportunity. On the third time of trying, a cross from George Bezas found J. Caruana to net the team's third of the night and give Oakleigh a 3-2 lead at the half-time break.

1966 looked to quickly bounce back into the match, however, it was not until the 23rd minute that they managed to breakthrough Havoc's defence to equalize. Their relentless attacking continued and over the following four minutes they had once again created a two-goal lead over a defensively struggling Oakleigh.

A fourth goal from Jake Winn looked to have raised hope for a second Havoc comeback but another 1966 goal ensured the end of Oakleigh's three game undefeated run.

The loss keeps Oakleigh in second place on the league table for at least two weeks, with the team facing a bye next week.
